I absolutely love designing kids bedrooms! The creative freedom is so invigorating plus kids make fun clients. My oldest son has been asking for black walls, which is very different from his light and bright room right now. I love this room designed by Kristin Jackson of the Hunted Interior. The warm wood tones and black are yummy!
I know that people struggle with how “themed” or “young” a room design should be. On one hand we don’t want our kids to be sick of the room quickly; on the other hand it brings me JOY to delight my kids. I don’t see a right or wrong way to go about it, if you want to get your son the Star Wars bed I wont argue with you. If you want to get your child a bed that will be more neutral that’s great too. What I am passionate about is weaving the child’s personality throughout a room in a way that feels artful and collected instead of “off the shelf”. My son Marek loves color which is great! I plan on weaving in some bright colors with the black and wood tones. Love this neon yellow in this room (source unknown).
I also love the idea of bringing large scale art over his bed. Marek is into science, skateboarding, baseball, reading and playing the guitar among other things! His art will reflect his personality, as all art should!! Photograph by the talented Seth Smoot.
I want to get his room done this spring and have started to pull some finishes. Lots of texture to start and layering in bold color on top.
Boys are so rough on their rooms so I am considering vinyl wall paper, otherwise I fear the black walls with need to be touched up constantly. This black and blue paper looks like an abstract city skyline and brings in a hint of Mareks love of super heroes.
I am considering an upholstered bed in Crypton finished fabric with faux leather piping. I want his room to feel cozy and warm and I love a chunky tweed!
Where do you stand on kids decor? Do you let them get involved or take the lead in design? Marek will be giving me input, but ultimately the room will be a surprise. I can’t wait!
