One of the biggest mistakes I see in homes is poor lighting. You can have a home that is well designed in every way but if the lighting is not done right the entire house can feel old, dingy and depressing! It is such an important element!!
One mistake I see is only using one “type” of lighting in a room, most commonly recessed lights.
We don’t need our homes looking like a commercial office space, or a laboratory! Consider layering in lamps, art lights, wall washers, under cabinet lighting or sconces with a few well placed recessed lights. Then, use simple lighting controls to get the level of light you need depending on the time of day. Michigan can be gray and dark, so indoor lighting can really impact our mood.
This kitchen we designed utilized art, under cabinet and over head lighting to create warmth. Even when it’s dark outside the mood is cheerful inside because the lighting is vibrant and flexible!
I will be talking about lighting on The WGVU Morning Show with Shelley Irwin and sharing more lighting mistakes and how to fix them on Monday, April 10 at 10:30am! Tune into 88.5/95.3FM or listen online at www.wgvu.org
