Before and After: From Storage Room to Home Office
I love transforming really difficult spaces. It’s almost as if the harder the design problem the more fun it is, because I know the result will be so satisfying! Some renovations are challenging because you don’t know exactly what you will find when the contractor starts opening up walls, or the existing architecture is beautiful and we need to mindfully update for modern living. This project was a challenge because it was a small room in a basement with no natural light and it needed to feel warm, inviting and layered.
Sorry for the blurry before pictures! This unfinished room in their basement was under utilized No windows, walls, flooring, electrical or furniture.
My client had his home office on the main floor and wanted to use that room for a den instead. He doesn’t work from home very much, but needed an organized space where he could display items from travel and school while getting a few things done.
Here are the after photos! It’s a common misunderstanding that people think small rooms with little light should not be painted dark. Light rooms look best when flooded with natural sunlight and dark colors in small rooms create drama and character. These custom built-ins added a ton of storage and hold a printer, filing, charging stations and office supplies.
Here is Rudy Malmquist getting the shot, he did a great job in such a small space. We added crown molding and new base trim, I love painting trim darker because it defines the room and adds interest.
Great art and accessories are essential to a finished room. Never. Enough. Art. EVER!
An Eames Lounge Chair and a pillow with their English Lab Max. I love Max, he is the sweetest dog and one of the reasons we got our Lab Lizzy. The design of this room mixes modern and traditional in a way that makes me so happy!
Lighting included a fun sputnick and mini spots to highlight built ins and framed memorabilia.
Can I just say… I am a sucker for wall to wall carpet with a great pattern. I love, love, love building texture into a room with flooring!
Such a great chair, from every angle.
Don’t be afraid to create beautiful rooms in dark corners of your basement, get the most out of the home you have!
